Black Milk- Popular DemandAlot of people were comparing Milk to
J Dilla (they are both from Detroit) and with that comparison, I deff had to check this album out.
My expectations high, I was let down because I didn't hear what everyone else did. Not to take anything away from the album, but Black Milk's "sound" is far from Dilla's. Milk's drums bang, but I was expecting Dilla's classic mellow sound that I love Dilla for
(Donuts) and minus track #4-Look at us now, there were not that many
"soulful" tracks on the album. Milk mentioned on the album that he uses soul samples in his "own way". Some like to "speed it up" but I can tell he is goin for his own sound and I can respect that.
Overall, my expectations made me ignore the quality of the album. As far as beats, the album is a pretty solid one. I didn't think the lyrics were that great. There were a few tracks that had solid concepts but from the start to the end of the album I felt like Milk was trying to explain that rapers were wack, or more so that he was better. EARLY in the album he says, "when i say cabbage you know I'm talkin bout the money/ And when you say the rap (game) you talkin bout a buffet/." I enjoyed that line, but after a while, the same topic started to rub me the wrong way.
